US 36 Added Travel Lanes

Avon, IN

DCCM is leading the design and ancillary services for the 4.5-mile-long urban reconstruction project that added a third travel lane in each direction. DCCM designers provided the engineer’s assessment recommendation for the addition and location of a third travel lane in either direction to minimize potential bottlenecking, minimize construction costs, and reduce impacts on the community and property owners. Our team also provided oversight for the design of pedestrian crossings with median refuge, pedestrian push buttons, and ADA-compliant curb ramps to provide continuity of local trails crossing US 36. ADA-compliant curb ramps and sidewalks were also included at public road approaches. In addition to project management, DCCM led the design of converting existing shoulders to travel lanes bordered by curb and gutter with turnouts to convey drainage. Due to high crash rates, the two-way left-turn lane was removed and replaced with a curbed center median. Pavement markings and signage throughout the corridor were also proposed to channelize left-turn lanes.

With this project located within a heavily used business corridor, our team focused on in-depth public outreach and local coordination to prioritize INDOT’s and the community’s needs. Our customized public outreach plan included one-on-one meetings with business owners, targeted community advisory committee (CAC), local government stakeholder meetings, one-on-one meetings with local EMS departments, one-on-one meetings with schools and school transportation departments, public information meetings, and a public hearing. By keeping the public and stakeholders informed early on and throughout development, the project avoided public controversy.
